Bougainville Mineral Investments Exploration EMP
Project details
Client: Bougainville Mineral Investments (BMI)
Location: Autonomous Region of Bougainville (Bougainville) in Papua New Guinea
Industry: Gold and technology metals
Business Services Provided: Exploration Environmental Management Plan (EMP)
Summary
Bougainville Mineral Investments (BMI) is a Queensland-based minerals exporter targeting gold and technology metals within renowned mineral provinces. BMI has acquired a number of exploration tenements in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville (Bougainville) in Papua New Guinea. Bougainville is known for its major copper and gold deposits, with significant potential for the discovery of these deposits within the region. Bougainville mining currently operates under the Mining Act 2015 which does not have any associated environmental regulations. It was agreed between BMI and the Autonomous Bougainville Government (ABG) that BMI exploration works would be undertaken in alignment with Queensland regulatory requirements where possible to bridge the gap and ensure best practice environmental management. As such, Cowie developed a Bougainville site specific exploration Environmental Management Plan (EMP) to ensure all relevant environmental objectives, including environmental performance in alignment with Queensland regulatory requirements, are met during the undertaking of BMI exploration activities.
Key Roles and Responsibilities
Senior Environmental Scientist
The Senior Environmental Scientist undertook a desktop assessment of the site’s environmental attributes and constraints in order to prepare the EMP. The desktop assessment allowed the senior enviro to prepare a site specific EMP in line with Queensland legislative requirements and industry best practices to ensure BMI exploration works would have the least environmental impact possible.
Key Outcomes
- Cowie gained valuable experience in assessing an environment very different to that of Queensland and applying Queensland legislation and best practice methods to the site.
